Sample Letters to the Editor

Personal letters to the editor – written in your own words – are the most effective. Sample letters are included here as guides for writing your own letter. You can also use parts of these samples in your letter. For some additional suggestions, take a look at the Talking Points.

To the Editor:

Research on both adult and early, or embryonic, stem cells is an important issue – especially for the hundreds of thousands of Kansas adults and children afflicted with diseases and injuries that could someday be cured with stem cell therapies. However, some state legislators continue to attempt to ban or restrict patient and doctor access to important types of stem cell research and cures in Kansas.

The opponents’ main objection to early stem cell research is their contention that a microscopic cluster of cells in a laboratory dish is a person. They have the right to hold this belief.

The majority of us Kansans, along with leading national and state medical and patient organizations, disagree. We support all types of stem cell research.

To show my support, I joined the Kansas Coalition for Lifesaving Cures. This coalition is dedicated to ensuring that Kansans will have equal access to any stem cell research and cures allowed under federal law and available to other Americans.

You can find out more about the coalition and get the facts about stem cell research by visiting the coalition’s website www.KansasCures.com and the KU Medical Center “Stem Cells 101” website at www.kumc.edu/stemcell.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter #2

To the Editor:

During this legislative session, certain Kansas politicians have repeatedly attempted to pass legislation that would ban, criminalize or restrict important types of stem cell research in Kansas – and actually prohibit Kansas patients from having access to future stem cell cures.

The members of the Kansas House and Senate who worked to defeat these anti-stem cell proposals deserve credit for studying the facts and for listening to their constituents. As shown by a recent public opinion survey, the overwhelming majority Kansas voters believe that any stem cell research and cures allowed under federal law should be allowed in Kansas.

Based on the facts and fairness, Kansans clearly deserve to have equal access to any current or future stem cell cures that are federally approved as safe and effective and available to other Americans. And, Kansas medical institutions should be allowed to provide and help find those cures.

Sincerely,

Sample Letter #3

To the Editor:

We need to let scientists do their jobs and conduct the stem cell research that’s needed to find lifesaving cures for ALS, diabetes, Parkinson’s and many other debilitating diseases and injuries. And we need to ensure that as research leads to cures, those cures remain available to Kansans just as they are to other Americans.

What we don’t need are politicians in Topeka trying to restrict our access to federally approved stem cell cures.

Decisions on medical treatments should continue to be made by patients, their families and their doctors. All Kansans need to protect this vitally important right.

Sincerely,
