Coalition Updates

July 11 , 2006

MORE LEADING PATIENT AND MEDICAL GROUPS JOIN OUR COALITION

We’re proud to announce that the Kansas Coalition for Lifesaving Cures now includes more than 60 leading patient and medical organizations – making us one of the largest coalitions of its kind in the state. We greatly appreciate this strong show of support for our efforts to ensure that Kansans will continue to have equal access to any stem cell research and cures allowed under federal law. Among the groups that have recently joined as organization members of our growing Coalition are:

  • American Academy of Neurology
  • American Federation for Aging Research
  • American Pediatric Surgical Association
  • Brain Tumor Action Network
  • Kidney Cancer Association
  • Miami Project to Cure Paralysis
  • National Association of Hepatitis Task Forces
  • National Partnership for Women & Families
  • North American Spine Society/National Association of Spine Specialists

You can see an updated list of our notable members on our website www.KansasCures.com.

U.S. SENATE TO VOTE ON IMPORTANT EARLY STEM CELL RESEARCH BILL

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote soon on H.R. 810, the bipartisan bill that would expand the number of stem cell lines eligible for federal funding of early, or embryonic, stem cell research. The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, passed last year by the U.S. House of Representatives, would lift the current ban on federal funding for research that uses stem cell lines created after August 9, 2001. By allowing additional stem cell lines to be used in research supported with federal funds, H.R. 810 would accelerate progress toward developing stem cell cures and treatments for diseases and injuries such as diabetes, Parkinson’s, spinal cord injury and many others.

NEW STEM CELL DOCUMENTARY NOW ON TV AND ONLINE

A new documentary produced by the Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures began airing July 10 on Missouri TV stations and cable networks. The documentary features interviews with leading medical experts and patient advocates, provides answers to common questions about stem cells and explains why more than 60 leading patient and medical groups support the Missouri Coalition’s ballot initiative to protect stem cell research in that state. The initiative will be on Missouri’s November state ballot.

You can watch the documentary on the Missouri Coalition’s website, www.MissouriCures.com. Kansans who live in areas served by Missouri broadcast stations can also check the website to see when the documentary will be shown on their local television stations.
